14 WAYS TO USE UNUSUAL THINGS FOR OTHER PURPOSES

5 Ways to Use Up That Bowl of Overripe Fruit on Your Counter

We admit—it’s tempting to toss out fruit that’s past its picture perfect . But just because your berries, bananas, or melons are looking a little mushy, it doesn't mean they're bad.

“While each of us has a different ‘ripe” preference, if you think it’s a little past its prime, it’s likely still OK to use,” says Emily Kyle, R.D.N. and owner of Emily Kyle Nutrition. Plus, by finding new ways to use too-ripe fruit, you won’t be flushing money—or food—down the drain.

According to the National Resources Defense Council, 40 percent of food in the U.S. is thrown out. “Reducing food waste is important and there are so many great ways to use up overripe fruit without throwing it in the trash,” says Kyle.

And don’t worry. Mother Nature has her own warning system for when things are too ripe to eat. “The biggest tell-tale sign of overripe fruit that is not OK to eat is the presence of mold,” says Kyle.

If it's not yet growing hair, here are five simple ways to make use of that slightly squish produce.

1. Prep Ready-to-Go Smoothies

Love smoothies but hate shelling out a pop at your local juice shop? Your overripe fruit could save you a lot of cash. “When fruit like strawberries, bananas, peaches, or mangoes are at the stage of just too ripe to be enjoyed naturally, chop them up and throw them in a Ziploc bag,” says Kyle. “Place the bag in the freezer for a perfectly easy, ready-to-go smoothie ingredient.”

2. Get Creative with Your Baking

While we all love anything avocado, the fruit (yes, it's a fruit!) can be quite finicky, seemingly going from rock hard to total mush in the span of a day. When they start to go brown, Davida Kugelmass, the blogger behind The Healthy Maven, bakes with them. “I use them in place of butter and oil in things like brownies and muffins,” she says, substituting one avocado for each half-cup of fat. Davida also freezes any extra overripe avocados to use in baking projects down the line. “Scoop out the flesh and freeze it in a freezer bag,” she says.

3. Whip Up Overnnight Chia Jam

Transform your wilty berries into a heart-healthy breakfast treat. “Try mashing fruit like blueberries or raspberries with a fork, combine with a tablespoon of water and a tablespoon of chia seeds,” says Kyle. “Refrigerate overnight and in the morning, you’ll have fresh, no-added-sugar jam to add to your morning toast or oatmeal.”

4. Infuse Your Water

Use that almost-funky fruit to add some flair to your H20 to stay hydrated. “When fruit is starting to go, usually the sweetness is pretty intense at that point,” says Davida. “And because the taste is so sweet, it flavors water really well.” Chop up your overripe berries, add them to a big jug of water, and you’ll have a refreshing (and natural) thirst quencher.

5. Popsicles

According to Davida, if you can freeze your rapidly ripening fruit, you can preserve it longer. One alternative to smoothies: popsicles. “Blend up the fruit and add coconut milk, or to keep it more like sorbet, add water and freeze it in popsicle molds,” says Davida. It’s the ideal treat on a hot summer day.
