Features of growing flower mimulyus

You can dilute the paints of the garden and add zest to it by using an unusual mimulus. Learn how to grow such an interesting plant.

What is this plant?

A mimulius is a plant belonging to the family of the Nortichnik, which is also called a gubastik and a monkey flower because of its external resemblance to the muzzle of these animals and lips. In the wild, mimulyusy found in the marshy and wet areas of New Zealand, South and North America, Australia.

There are both upright and reaching 50-70 cm in height species, and creeping. The flowers are unusual, small and may have a variety of shades: red, yellow, burgundy, orange. Spotted varieties are popular. The most common are such varieties as mimulyus red, brindle, nutmeg, yellow, tricolor and speckled.

How to plant?

Plant cultivation can be carried out in two main ways: from seedlings or in the open ground on the site.If you decide to plant such a flower in the first way, then use a fairly loose and nutritious soil that has a neutral level of acidity and is suitable for flowering plants.

Seeds need to be sown directly on the ground surface, for convenience, mixing them with a small amount of sand. Next, the soil is moderately moistened by spraying water with a spray gun, and then the containers or pots are covered with a thick transparent film or glass to create a semblance of a greenhouse. Maintain temperature from 18-19 to 22-23 degrees.

Growing from seed by seedling is carried out in the period from the end of winter to the middle of spring. The soil is daily ventilated and constantly maintained in a moderately humid state. After the emergence of shoots, the film is removed, and the containers are moved to a well-lit place with a temperature of about 12-15 degrees. When the mimulus is overgrown with several leaves, shoots can be dived in separate containers.

They move to the garden around the end of spring, beginning in mid-May. The soil should be loamy with a significant content of humus and peat. The optimal distance between individual bushes is about 20-30 centimeters.

Also, the landing can be carried out immediately into the ground, but only after the earth warms up - in late May or June. In this case, you will see the first flowers only by the end of summer, while home-grown mimulyusy flowers will begin to bloom in June or even earlier.

Peculiarities of care

Care of mimulyus is to comply with several conditions:

  1. Watering should be frequent, but moderate, so that the soil is not overwetted: this can lead to rotting of the root system. In the hot summer months, the mimulus should be watered more often: the groundwater should not dry out completely.
  2. After two weeks after planting in the ground, you can apply fertilizer, for example, mineral, intended for flowering plants. Feeding is carried out about once every two to three weeks. But if the soil is rich and nutritious, then you can make them less often, since a glut of soil with minerals is also undesirable.
  3. If you decided to grow a mimulus in a seedling way, then after the first spring or summer flowering, the faded shoots should be cut so that the flower opens in all its glory for the second time - approximately to the beginning of autumn. Also be sure to remove dried foliage and weakened shoots.

If you create favorable conditions for your mimulus, to which he will become accustomed, he will soon begin to multiply by self-sowing and spread independently on the soil. But still rare varieties multiply by cuttings, this method allows you to get stronger shoots and immediately form them.

The cutting is carried out in the summer. From an adult healthy plant, a shoot with two completely formed internodes separates. It is placed in a tank with sand, which is regularly moistened. And to maintain a constant moisture and accelerate the process of rooting, a package is put on the container. But it should be regularly removed to spray the soil and ventilate it to avoid decay. Roots usually begin to appear after about 2.5-3 weeks.

Possible problems

If a beautiful mimulus feels comfortable, it will be healthy. But still some pests can affect such a plant. First of all, it is aphid and whitefly. And if you find traces of their presence, then remove the affected shoots, and immediately treat the whole plant and soil with an appropriate means.

If the summer is very hot, then gray rot can occur. And such a disease develops rapidly and almost immediately affects all parts of the plant, so the mimulus will have to be completely destroyed, otherwise the rot spreads to neighboring bushes and spoils the entire flowerbed. Healthy flowers after removing infectious are treated with an insecticidal drug.

Two more threats are black foot and powdery mildew. These diseases are eliminated by the use of fungicides. To reduce the risks of pests and diseases for preventive purposes, use special preparations and do not allow moisture stagnation in the soil.

Let bright mimulyus will decorate your garden and will bring in it new paints!
