Hindenburg Mystery Solved After More Than 75 Years

Mar 5, 2013

Seventy-six years ago, the
Hindenburg airship, an 800-foot long blimp carrying 97 passengers, was in the process of revolutionizing air travel across the Atlantic Ocean. On May
3, 1937, the Hindenburg departed from Friedrichshafen, Germany, for another
one of its famed transatlantic journeys for the United States. The ship was
scheduled to make 10 journeys between Europe and the United States, offering a
more simplistic form of travel between the two continents. The aircraft's
anticipated arrival in Lakehurst, NJ, was
expected to be a successful landing when it burst into flames not far from its
landing site and crashed amidst frightened onlookers, killing 36 people.

For over three quarters of a century, researchers have tried
to determine the cause of the crash. Discovery
Channel'sMythbusterseven dedicated an episode to testing the
several theories that have perpetuated over the years, including the
possibility of an on-board bomb. The quirky scientists were able to rule out
some whacky theories, but didn't make much headway in the unraveling of the
mystery.

After decades of speculation, Jem Stansfield, an English aeronautical
engineer with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, TX,
concluded that static electricity was the culprit of the tragic Hindenburg
disaster. According to the groundbreaking findings, which will be featured
in a documentary in the UK this Thursday, the Hindenburg had been leaking
some of the hydrogen gas from its large balloon during its final journey, and
then passed through an electrical storm. The static electricity then ignited
the hydrogen which led to the fatal explosion.

Now that one of the greatest puzzles of the 20thcentury has been solved, we can't help but wonder what mindboggling questions
scientists will answer next.
