How to propagate orchids at home?
Some consider the orchid to be a capricious flower, and most simply do not dare to reproduce it, thinking that nothing will come of it. But the process is simple and even for not very experienced gardeners. Some varieties of orchids are quickly accepted in a new place, you only need to take into account the methods of reproduction of one or another species.
Orchid reproduction by division
To multiply an orchid at home can be division. This is the easiest way, but such reproduction does not fit all varieties of this plant. It can be applied to species with a sympodial growth form - these are orchids with a multitude of horizontally growing shoots (pseudobulb) connected by a rhizome (rhizome), which include:
In order for the reproduction of orchid division to be successful, it is necessary that the plant has a large number of pseudobulbs. It is possible to divide a flower if, at each part of the plant, at separation, there will be at least 2-3 pseudobulb sprouts. It is necessary to do this at the beginning of spring, so you will have more chances that the plant will take root.
Remove the expanded plant from the pot, carefully separate the root system from the ground, rinse it with warm water and cut with a pruning shear or a knife into several parts. At least two pseudobulbs should remain on each part. Be sure to sprinkle the plant cuts with charcoal powder. Now you can plant a flower in pots with a pre-prepared substrate. Subsequently, follow the usual rules of orchid care. When new young shoots appear on the plant, we can assume that the reproduction was successful.
Reproduction orchids cuttings
Orchid reproduction is often carried out by cuttings. This method is used for varieties with a monopodial growth form (orchids that do not have rhizomes or pseudobulbs, with one vertically growing stem and one apical growth point). These include the following varieties:
For grafting from a plant, it is necessary to cut a side shoot, if it is. When it is not, you can take faded flower stalks. Of these, cuttings are cut, the length of which can vary from 10 to 15 cm. Each of them should have at least two nodes with axillary buds (buds formed on the leaf). When you plant the cuttings, remember that the strongest buds are on the peduncle below the rest: it is on them that you need to rely.
Then lay the cuttings in a moist soil and cover with foil. As a result, you get a little greenhouse. For soil, you can use ordinary sand or sphagnum moss. As soon as the cuttings give the roots, they can be planted in a pot.
Reproduction of orchids kiddies
It is easiest for kids to grow an orchid at home. However, this method is not suitable for all varieties of this magnificent plant. They can reproduce only phalaenopsis and dendrobium.
Kids are side shoots. These are new plants of small size, they are formed on the already faded peduncles. They do not always appear, but only when the temperature of the air in the room is high, where there should also be good humidity. There is a way to provoke the appearance of children. It is necessary to feed the plant with fertilizers with a fairly high nitrogen content. When babies appear, you need to spray the flower three times a day. As a result, they will give roots. However, you should wait until at least 3 leaves appear on the new plant, and the roots are 7 cm long. After that, you can safely separate the baby from the mother plant and plant it in a pot. This should be done carefully so as not to damage it.
Cutting the baby off the peduncle is best with a sharp and clean blade. At the same time, you should leave about 1 cm on each side. Spice the slices with charcoal powder. Baby set in a pot and sprinkle with substrate. The next few months, the plant is recommended to keep in high humidity conditions. To do this, it is better to build a small greenhouse or greenhouse.
Reproduction of orchids seeds
Now in the markets and flower shops you can find orchid seeds. That's just to multiply the plant in this way is unlikely to succeed. After all, the process should take place under sterile conditions, and they can be achieved only in special laboratories. It is also worth noting that the seeds can germinate for quite a long time - from 3 to 9 months. And to get ready for planting plants will have to wait another 2-3 years. Therefore, you should not buy orchid seeds, because they may not germinate, which means that the money will be spent in vain.
