So the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards was basically a three-hour concert—but isn't that what fans actually want to see from musicians? I could have watched Lady Antebellum sing with Stevie Nicks all night! (Could have done without the awkward advertisement of Guy Fieri's new Vegas restaurant—seriously, what was that about?)

But between jams, the Academydidmanage to give away a few trophies, three of them to one of our favorite stars, Miranda Lambert, who gave a brief but telling speech when she took "Female Vocalist of the Year" for thefifthtime. Miranda shared the honor with the other nominees, saying: "I was just hanging out with Trisha Yearwood back there—holy crap. And I was standing next to Sheryl Crow, complete and utter rock star. And Kacey Musgraves, I grew up with her, she wrote the single of the year this year. And Carrie Underwood is my buddy, y'all, and she's a phenomenon."

Miranda's emphasis on sisterhood over rivalry reminded us of something she told REDBOOK just last week, when we were chatting up the star about her upcoming album, Platinum. "I think that women should support women," she said. "It is a little bit harder [for us]. We're stronger together." That's one of the reasons she loves "Something Bad," her new duet with Carrie Underwood: "I think that's great that we can collaborate and lift each other up and be fans of each other. This duet pairing is a force to be reckoned with. Carrie is an amazing vocalist and an incredible artist. Her coming into the studio definitely made me step up to the plate and make sure I was on my game."

We love hearing talented women supporting other talented women! But let's not forget the most moving part of Miranda's speech on Sunday night. The singer dedicated the award to a family in her hometown of Lindale, Texas, who is grieving the loss of their newborn son.
