MARIANO DI VAIO IS GQ MAN OF THE YEAR 2018
Now Playing: GQ Men Of The Year Awards airs on Star World on Sunday, Oct 16
On September 28, the country’s most brilliant (and best dressed) will descend on The Grand Hyatt in Mumbai for the GQ Men of The Year 2014 awards.
And along with the good guys at Chivas, we’ve been thinking hard about what they should be drinking. Given the rock ‘n’ roll theme, the bartenders will be muddling some seriously genius concoctions inspired by some of the biggest rock hits of the century. If you won’t be making it to the party, here’s a quick DIY.
“Let’s swim to the moon, let’s climb through the tide, and penetrate the evenin’ that the city sleeps to hide.”
The words to this song came to Jim Morrison on a drug-hazed night, while he slept on the rooftop of a beach house in California. Becoming the first song ever recorded by The Doors, it stood for many things: young love, sex and the advent of the acid rock era. Chivas’s eponymous cocktail has an acidic aftertaste.
60ml Chivas 12 YO
10ml of balsamic reduction
20ml black grape juice
90ml of ginger ale.
Method:Measure the whisky and balsamic reduction in an old fashioned glass and stir well to mix. Fill the glass with ice and top with ginger ale. Garnish with three black cherries
Stairway to Heaven
“There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven.”
Robert Plant spent much of the Seventies answering questions about the lyrics he wrote for this song. “Depending on what day it is, I still interpret the song a different way,” was often his response. Infused with cinnamon syrup and aromatic bitters, this cocktail has a layered complexity that will taste different with every sip.
10ml Chivas 12 YO
5 drops Angostura aromatic bitters
10ml cinnamon syrup
30ml apple juice
Method:Pour the whisky, aromatic bitters, cinnamon syrup and apple juice in an old fashioned glass and stir well to mix. Fill with ice and top with crushed ice. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick and red apple slices and serve.
“Escape the feeling, feel a wreck, hear her heart beating, loud as thunder.”
Inspired by Iggy Pop’s infatuation with Kuelan Nguyen, a beautiful Vietnamese woman, David Bowie’s iconic song spoke about destroying the cullture of a Chinese girl with Western values. The Asian twist given to this whisky cocktail however would surely have had his approval.
60ml Earl Grey infused Chivas 12 YO
2 kafir lime leaves
30ml hot water
1 orange peel
Method:In a teacup, infuse an Earl Grey tea bag with hot water for 30 seconds. In a separate mixing glass, drop two kafir lime leaves and muddle gently to release flavors. Measure the Chivas 12 and 30 ml Earl Grey infusion, fill with ice and stir for a long time. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Release oils from an orange peel. Drop and serve.
Heal the World
“There’s a place, in your heart. And I know that it is love.”
We don’t know about the world, but turns out, it only takes a bit of chilled whisky swirled together with elderflower syrup to heal our soul.
60ml Chivas 12 YO
10ml Elderflower Syrup
Method:Stir the two ingredients together for a long time. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Spray the drink with rose water and serve.
