Winter 2018 Hair Color Ideas
The Best Winter Hair Color Trends
When you meet with your hairstylist, bring a picture of the tone you like and be open minded, suggests Christine Thompson, master colorist and co-founder of Spoke and Weal salons: "A professional hair colorist may suggest modifying a shade, color progression, or color tone to suit your skin tone, lifestyle, eye color, and personal aesthetic."
Celebrity inspiration:Cara Delevingne, Ariana Grande, and Kim Kardashian have all tried silver locks.
Maintain the color:"I love Aveda’s blue malva conditioner as well as products from Uberliss," Thompson says. "Conditioners or other products with blue and violet hues work to eliminate warmth in the hair." Thompson suggests diluting them with your regular conditioner if you want to keep a cool tone.
Inky black = jet black with a bluish undertone. "Some blacks can turn reddish in the light, but for this color, make sure your colorist knows you want cool-midnight black," Thompson says. "In the salon I will layer direct dyes such Manic Panic's 'After Midnight' over a black to create a deep cool midnight color."
Celebrity inspiration:Dita Von Teese, Katy Perry
Maintain the color:Aveda's black Malva, a conditioner with cool tones, will keep black hair looking dark and shiny, says Thompson. "Under direction from your color pro, direct dyes may be desired between visits depending on how cool-toned you would like your hair to look," she notes.

This winter you'll see this color popping up all over – on blondesandbrunettes. And you don't need a complete color overhaul to work this hue, says Thompson: "You'll see a double process blond with strong all-over pink, and even pink tipping, keeping natural roots and blending in dimensional pink from the mid-shaft to the ends of the hair."
Celebrity inspiration:"Ruby Rose, Ashley Benson, Kate Hudson, Rihanna, Rita Ora, and Kelis have all had different takes on pinks," Thompson says. "Honestly, the examples of celebrities being pink for a while or recently are almost endless. "
Maintain the color:Thompson tells her clients to use Uberliss Sustainer Pink Rose conditioner and direct dyes in-between appointments. "If you're nervous to try direct dyes, put your regular conditioner in first and layer the toning product over—you can always add more easily," she says. "If you're less daring, go to the salon for an in-between toner or color refresh. Manic Panic’s Cotton Candy is a great go-to."
This hair color is a perennial favorite, but warm blondes this season feel fresh thanks to dark roots and balayage. This coloring technique makes honey tones look painted on, with no harsh lines. "The warm tones are really flattering for most skin colors and eye colors," Thompson says. "They are easy to maintain and usually grow out nicely if you have darker hair."
Celebrity inspiration: "Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, Ciara, Jennifer Lopez, and Rosy Huntington all have variations of warm honey blond, either with or without darker roots," Thompson says.
Maintain the color:If you're looking for a low-maintenance color, this is a great way to go. " is great for honey, neutral-to-warm blondes," Thompson says.

"Usually people go darker for winter, but this year, we will be seeing a lot more 'winter white' blondes," says celebrity colorist Justin Anderson. "Tell your stylist you want to go a lot blonder and cooler this winter. You'd be trading in golden tones for cool tones and getting rid of those 'beachy' lived-in highlights."
Celebrity inspiration:Michelle Williams and Miley Cyrus.
Maintain the color:"Keep your icy blonde cool and free of any yellow or brass with a purple shampoo," Anderson says. "My favorite is the Cool Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner by dpHUE."
While blondes are going blonder, brunettes are asking for warmer, richer tones, says Meri Kate O'Connor, a colorist at Eva Scrivo. "If you are unsure as to whether you want highlights or an all-over color, I suggest asking your colorist beforehand how to book your appointment," O'Connor says. "This will guarantee enough time is allotted; more time is always better than less."
Celebrity inspiration: "Priyanka Chopra has a great, rich, multi-dimensional espresso hue that really pops with her skin tone," O'Connor says.
Maintain the color: "I always suggest my clients come back for glazes in-between color appointments," O'Connor says. "This will refresh their color and help keep it looking rich and vibrant.
