Opaque glass, shaped by hand
with its feminine shape
seemed to represent my life.
As I watched, it drained away
with each passing grain of sand.
Each translucent particle
as it fell in the glass,
brought to mind
each step, each breath, each moment.
Time, the substance of my life was
draining away, also.
If I could hold time in my hand,
and examine it
would I feel the warmth,
the essence as living?
When time is gone,
it will never return.
It cannot be reclaimed,
recycled or undone.
As long as you and I have time
we have life,
an opportunity for hope,
the possibility of
The grains of sand
continue to fall,
When pain enters your life
it deprives you of time.
Like a thief it absconds
with your most precious possession.
Without permission it continues to invade,
permeating each moment
with its vile presence.
Sunrise and sunset lose their accustomed places.
Nights become longer, days askew,
all of life is a blur.
The top of the hourglass
Is now empty.
Time to turn it over.
Like my life the hourglass is
upside down but
with a new supply of sand.
